Each July, the West comes alive with the California Rodeo Salinas. One of the most prestigious stops on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) circuit and part of the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour, the Rodeo (locally pronounced ro-day-oh) attracts more than 700 top-ranked professional cowboys and cowgirls competing for over $250,000 in prize money annually.
An outgrowth of the Spanish ranchero days when the semi-wild herds of cattle were gathered for branding, ear-marking and castration, the word rodeo is Spanish for "round-up." Today, the Salinas stop is the largest rodeo in the state, and includes the traditional events like barrel racing, saddle-bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping and bull riding. 2009 will mark the 99th Anniversary of the California Rodeo Salinas and the organization is already gearing up for the Centennial celebration in 2010.

Professional Bull Riding

Wednesday July 15th is your chance to get your adrenaline pumping as you watch 40 of the best Professional Bull Riders in the United States take on fierce bulls at 7pm at the Salinas Sports Complex. Gates open at 5pm; Tickets range from $10 for children’s grandstand seats to $75 for track seating. The Bull Crossing Tent will also have live music for those over 21 who are looking to socialize after the PBR ($10 cover). Tickets go on sale in March of 2009.

The 99th Annual California Rodeo Salinas takes place July 16th through the 19th. Performances start at 6pm on Thursday July 16th and Friday July 17th and at 1:00pm on Saturday July 18th and Sunday July 19th. The Rodeo is a truly unique event with this year’s show featuring the Toyota Tundra Instant Replay Screen bringing action from the chutes and arena closer to your seats, the crowd-favorite Freestyle Bullfights and professional cowboys and cowgirls riding broncs, roping steers, turning barrels and more. The midway features several booths and areas to entertain everyone from Kids in the Kids Corral to Teens in the Teen Lounge and adults who want to socialize in the Bull X-ing Tent or Jack Daniel's Saloon.
